Medications Used to Treat the Drug Addicts

Addiction is a physical need for the drugs, which has many negative effects on the health of the individual. It is very hard to overcome this drug addiction, An addict can undergo treatment in a rehab center. Medications are also used for treating the addicts, both during the addictive stages and after the treatment at the rehab centers. Medication is very effective for treating the addicts when it is combined with the other methods of the treatment. There are different medications available for treating the drug addicts and the use of the medication depends on the stage of addiction and the type of the drug abused.

Following are the different types of medications used for treating the drug addicts:

Methadone:
Methadone is a synthetic opiate and it belongs to the family of heroin, morphine and codeine. Methadone supplements are given to the addicts in gradually increasing dosage, then after the doses of the medicine are gradually decreased. As the methadone is also an opiate, there is a risk that the patient may get addicted to the drug. Methadone must usually be administered in a treatment center.

Anti Depressants:
These anti depressants provide emotional stability in the addicts and this is caused because of the increase in serotonin levels in the brain. Anti depressants shows greater effect when combined with therapy and these medications should be taken only with a doctor’s prescription. While prescribing these medication for the patients the doctors should also be aware whether the patient is using any other medicines or not, as the anti depressants can react easily with other medications.

Disulfiram:
It is also known as Antabuse, and it is used to treat the alcohol addicts. These drugs react with the alcohol in the body of the addict and cause vomiting, nausea and similar side effects. Because of these effects, when the addict consumes alcohol, it makes him unpleasant and prevents him from taking alcohol.

Buprenorphine:
This medicine helps to decrease the physical cravings for the drug and makes withdrawal symptoms easier to handle. It is also a type of opioid. It has fewer side effects than methadone, and with the prescription of doctor this can be used by the patient at home.
